Press Releases

We need to stop discarding fish and discard the Common Fisheries Policy instead.- Farage

UKIP Press Release

Tuesday May 31, 2011

After speaking with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall of the FishFight Campaign outside the European Parliament today

Nigel Farage MEP, UKIP leader, keen sea angler and member of the EP Fisheries Committee said:

"Hugh has done great work in highlighting the issue of discards- sadly however the Commission has talked a lot but but produced no substantial change.

The problem is the CFP itself - it robs fishermen in every nation of a sense of ownership and responsibility for their waters. It is a prime example of 'Tragedy of the Commons'. No-one feels responsible and so fishermen are induced to rape the seas of fish in the short-term.

Fishermen in countries like Norway and Iceland however outside the EU and the CFP care for their waters and fish responsibly, watching for the future.

UKIP Policy is to withdraw from the EU and the CFP, put more fishermen to work in British national waters and stop this awful policy of discards. It is immoral to dump perfectly good but dead fish in the sea. I have campaigned against discards for years, pulling out of the CFP is the only long-term solution to prevent this happening.

We need to stop discarding fish and discard the Common Fisheries Policy instead.

The UK fishing fleet has nearly halved in 18 years while our waters are full of Spanish boats which throw fish caught in our waters overboard. This stupidity has got to be stopped."

EU Directive on renewable energy halts production at the £300m Ensus plant on Teeside

Dear Editors,

It has been reported that the 4 month halt to production at the £300m Ensus plant on Teeside is due to an EU Directive on renewable energy. Despite the Plant's efforts to bring production costs down, the Directive is forcing Ensus to use renewable sources. In the meantime, production is down, jobs are being suspended. Also more than likely, when production restarts, jobs will be cut due to the high cost of renewable sources. The EU is once again damaging our industries while trying to be "saviours" of our planet. Let's get real and let's tell the EU where to go!

Here is the original report from the Financial Times;

Poor demand leads to closure of biofuels refinery - Europe's largest biofuels refinery, the £300m Ensus plant on Teesside, is to halt production for up to four months (...) because of slow implementation of a renewable energy directive by European Union member states and a flood of cheap imported ethanol from the US. The EU directive stipulates that a proportion of transport fuel must come from renewable sources to help combat global warming. (The Financial Times p2)

Farage opposes Cigarette Advertising Ban

UKIP leader and smoker, Nigel Farage said today:

"Our puritan political class want us to stop smoking completely. As a smoker who believes in personal liberty, I think these purse-lipped restriction merchants need to be told where to go. On behalf of the 12 million British smokers, I'll be happy to tell the puritans were to go.

They want to stop advertising of cigarettes because smoking is bad for us.

What are they going to ban next? They might as well ban the display of doughnuts and demand fish and chip shops be covered up. Obesity kills more than cancer.

This move is a massive boost for the counterfeit tobacco trade and a boon to black market fraudsters. It will also make smoking appear more illicit and attractive to teenagers. These busy-bodies need to stop interfering in our lives.

It is also an attack on small shopkeepers in particular, as it hurts them disproportionately. It could end up doing to corner shops what the smoking ban did to country pubs - put them to the wall. Not a good thing at all."

On National No- Smoking Day, Farage said he would smoke in his Strasbourg office in protest.

EU bank tax plan 'attack on City'

Calls for a new EU tax on banks and finance houses to help repay the cost of the economic crisis have been slammed as an attack on the City of London.

Euro-MPs in Strasbourg voted overwhelmingly for the tax - with proceeds to go straight to the EU budget - in a move designed to plough extra cash into development aid and the fight against climate change.

But the European Commission immediately cautioned against such a move without matching international measures, fearing that an EU-only tax would hit European competitiveness.

Tory MEP Vicky Ford said the proposed "financial transactions tax" would effectively add hugely to the UK's EU budget contributions, while putting a part of national tax policy in the hands of Brussels.

"Whilst it is absolutely right that financial services companies should pay increased taxes, this is not the way to do it," she said.

"A European financial transaction tax would be a tax on the City of London raised by Brussels to fund pet projects. No wonder Labour MEPs are so enthusiastic for it."

She went on: "Labour MEPs want to treble the UK's payments to the EU. That is simply indefensible at a time when they should be seeking to cut what we pay to Brussels. Any financial transaction tax levied must be in concert with at least the G20 countries, with revenues going to national exchequers, not to the EU.

"Imposing a tax of this nature without a global agreement would cause some of our financial services sector to relocate, losing the UK billions in tax revenues and costing untold jobs."

UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage said the move was "kamikaze economics", adding: "This proposal is to introduce a financial transaction tax just in the EU. However, we live in a global economy and if we become uncompetitive through tax or regulation, people simply move their businesses elsewhere.

"The biggest foreign exchange and financial sector is in the City of London. If I did not know better I would think there was a plot afoot here ... to stop the Anglo-Saxons getting on with their business. If we continue down this route, Britain will lose its biggest industry."

Privatisation of Postal Services

Today, Vince Cable has announced the privatisation of our postal services. In his own words, Mr Cable stated that "We urgently need to bring in private capital". While I believe that Royal Mail probably does need private capital, the reasons for the collapse of Royal Mail are not widely known.
It was in fact three Postal Directives from the EU institutions that opened Royal Mail to competition in the Postal Market. Both Directives were supported by then Liberal Democrat MEPs, Nick Clegg and Chris Huhne. The effect of such competition caused Royal Mail much difficulty as it was not designed to operate as a competing Company.

The Directives in fact allowed private companies such as UPS, UK Mail and others to deliver standard Mail usually exclusive to Royal Mail at more competitive prices.

Here are the Links to the Directives: http://www.bis.gov.uk/policies/business-sectors/postal-services/european-directives

Therefore, my argument is this - If we were not members of the European Union, Royal Mail would not be under the pressure it finds itself. Only UKIP voted against the three Postal Services Directives.

Lib Dem Porn Plans

“I am absolutely appalled that the Liberal Democrats would allow 16 year olds to appear in and watch pornographic films. This is another case of Loony Lib Dems”

The whole point of Government is to protect our citizens, not let them be involved in something at such a young age.

John Tennant completely opposes this policy, and said:

“Frank Hindle, the Liberal Democrat Candidate for Gateshead should be embarrassed that his party is asking for Gateshead residents to vote for him whilst his party wants to allow 16 year olds to be in pornographic films”

Immigration Is High On The Adenda

“Immigration is clearly very high on the agenda, and while I have been out on the doorstep, there are many people frustrated that the three failed old parties are not addressing this issue.”

UKIP is the only party that is not afraid to make clear that Immigration is an issue that needs to be dealt with effectively and from a non-racist perspective.
The Liberal Democrats want up to 1million Illegal immigrants to be given an amnesty

The Tories ignore the fact that Britain’s EU Open Borders policy  is the real reason why immigration levels are so high

Labour have been in power for 13 years now and if they really wanted something to be done about immigration, they would have done it by now.

None of the failed old parties are admitting to the public that while we are in the EU, we cannot control our own borders.

John Tennant, the UK Independence Party Candidate for Gateshead has made immigration the focus issue in his campaign – offering the people of Gateshead the chance to have an MP who will not only work tirelessly to see better border controls, but also an MP who will listen to the issues affecting Gateshead Residents.

“We want better democracy for the British people, and it can start here in Gateshead by electing a UKIP MP on May 6th”

About John

Born and raised in Gateshead, I have deep reservations about the political class in Britain today. There is a need for radical change and only UKIP offers that - low taxes, tough immigration controls, accountable politicians and representing local constituents. Give me the chance to prove myself, Vote for John Tennant.
